Meet Debra

Debra Van Pelt was born in Ames, Iowa to a family that prioritized public service, volunteer work, and involvement in local government. Deb received her education in Iowa, graduating from Dunkerton High School in 1977. She learned the importance of hard work, community service, and commitment from her family and the farming community she was raised in, and brought those values with her to Island County.

Deb and her husband Matt, a retired Navy flight engineer turned construction contractor, made Oak Harbor their home almost twenty years ago. They are proud of their five children and eight grandchildren. Son Adam lives in Waterloo, Iowa with his family. Daughter Amy and her family are based in Polk City, Iowa. Daughter Amber and her family, son Justin and his family, and youngest son Zachary all live in Oak Harbor.

Deb has been involved with the Island County Clerk's office for 18 years. Hired as a part-time Deputy Clerk in 2005, she worked her way into a full time position and was elected County Clerk in 2010. Since then, Deb has built and sustained relationships with the public, the local Bar Association, other County departments, and the court. She has a clear understanding of the responsibilities of the County Clerk's office - she also has the experience to carry out those responsibilities well and consistently.
